Janek gave instructions for the guard to remain outside the door and made his way to Serat’s rooms, cursing Lorel with every black curse he’d learned during a lifetime of battlefield service.

She was a spy. A spy with connections to the Raven. A spy who’d wormed her way into his bed. She’d betrayed him, not the other way around.

Even so, he’d hoped to keep Serat out of it. He would have spared her that if he could. But they’d travelled to Haxon before returning to the Keep, and Captain Madin, who’d wanted to make sure he got full credit for his bloody work, had sent a messenger to Serat with his report. It was fortunate that the messenger had been delayed, or Lorel might already be dead. The bored consul was highly entertained by the fact that a backwater rebel spy had managed to attach herself to Janek.

Serat saw redemption in this turn of events, a chance to advance his fortunes and escape Erys. And Serat wasn’t going to be satisfied with the answers Lorel had given so far. He’d draw out the interrogation just to watch Janek squirm.

The last thing he needed was that kind of scrutiny, especially with mages wandering about the Keep. He couldn’t afford to do anything to draw the attention of the Archmage. He would not put Caden at risk. Not to protect an enemy spy.

He smoothed the scowl from his face as he passed a pair of guards. It would be more merciful to kill her than to let Serat have her. He should have done it immediately after questioning her. The knife had been in his hand. It would have been an easy thing to slice just a little too deeply and blame it on carelessness or rage. And it would have saved everyone a great deal of pain and trouble. She was an enemy spy. He didn’t owe her anything more than a clean death—if he even owed her that much.

Still…

He could still see her as he’d left her, tied to his bed, terrified despite her bravado and so glorious in her defeat that he’d felt dirty just looking at her.

He’d cut her. Damn it.

The fortress of stone and iron was eerily dark though the sun had barely set. It was as if a shadow had fallen over the old Keep, and everyone who could retire to their rooms early had done so. Those who could not held their breath, anxiously watching one another and hoping that the brewing trouble did not overflow into their hands.

Janek passed silently between the circles of light cast by the torches affixed to the walls. Cold, damp and wretched place. He couldn’t wait to leave it.

He nodded to the guards standing to either side of the door leading into Serat’s quarters. The one on the right knocked on the heavy slab of iron-barred wood before opening the door. Janek murmured his thanks and stepped into another world.

It might have been a room in the summer palace. Long silk drapes in blues and greens covered the windows.
